Alex Jacobs is a private tutor and executive functioning coach with over 20 years of experience working with students across a wide range of academic subjects and standardized tests.
Alex was born and raised in Manhattan, where he attended the Horace Mann School from kindergarten through twelfth grade. While in high school, he tutored elementary school students both privately and through school-run programs. His experience at a rigorous New York preparatory school gives him insight into the unique challenges and pressures students in that environment face.
Alex attended Oberlin College, where he earned his B.A. in Sociology. During college, he continued working with elementary and middle school students, first as an assistant teacher at Grace Church School’s summer program and later as a math and literacy tutor at Goddard Riverside Community’s Star Learning Center.
Since 2017, Alex has worked with My Learning Springboard, providing one-on-one tutoring and coaching for students in grades 3–12. He tutors math, science, and the humanities and prepares students for the SAT, ACT, and all levels of the ISEE. Over sustained partnerships, his students regularly achieve significant score increases.
Alex has extensive experience working with students with learning differences and navigating the accommodations that support them. He tailors his approach to each student’s strengths and areas of challenge, working closely with teachers, in-school learning specialists, educational therapists, and other professionals to ensure coordinated, comprehensive support.
Alex is also the founder of Beats for Beginners, a music technology workshop for students of all ages that introduces the fundamentals of digital music production, including sampling, beatmaking, synthesis, remixing, and sound design. He has led workshops at nonprofit institutions such as the 92nd Street Y and the Henry Street Settlement, among others.
Whether helping young readers navigate their first novel or guiding students through applications and admissions tests, Alex’s spirited demeanor makes seemingly mundane work engaging and fulfilling for learners at every level. When he is not teaching, he can be found building musical instruments, collecting antique maps, or organizing impromptu trivia competitions among friends.

As a young child, Angela Krontiris Lowery found herself creating and solving self-assigned numerical and geometrical puzzles. From summer evenings spent predicting the schedules of the railroad trains near her house, to winter weekends spent sequencing similar sidewalk contours on her pocket map of Brooklyn, Angela’s detective-like curiosity led her to indulge in an education filled with mathematical lucidity and certainty.
