On June 12, 2023, Brad Hoffman and Faya Hoffman — both College Counselors and Board Certified Educational Planners — met with high school families and faculty at TASIS Portugal to explore the college application process at English-speaking universities or colleges with English undergraduate programs spanning the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. Amy Glickman is a native New Yorker. She was born and raised in Brooklyn and now resides and works in Manhattan. Amy earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary and Special Education from Brooklyn College and a Master’s degree in Learning Disabilities from Teacher’s College, Columbia University. While at Columbia her work focused on the assessment and remediation of reading and math disabilities. Each semester she interned at the Child Study Center where she gained experience in administering a battery of classroom based and standardized assessment measures to identify strengths and weaknesses of individual students and then developed an intervention plan based on the assessment findings. Upon graduating from Teacher’s College, she worked as a classroom teacher at the Stephen Gaynor School, where she taught students with language-based learning disabilities. While at Stephen Gaynor Amy developed and implemented an after-school computer skills training program which was tailored to the individual needs of the students.
Starting during the pandemic, we have seen a revolution in college admissions with many colleges and universities making ACT or SAT testing optional. This optionality has actually created confusion and often more anxiety for students and families over how to interpret each college’s policy. It’s worth remembering that The ACT and SAT are designed as diagnostic assessments of a student’s academic skills in reading, mathematics, and writing. Required or not, these tests offer a way for students to showcase their academic mastery. In June 2021, The College Board discontinued the optional writing section of its SAT product.
