Ian Cheung

Ian Cheung got his start in education as a sophomore in high school, where he peer tutored his classmates in English, Calculus, and even Constitutional Law. That experience, combined with his time captaining his tri-state math team to a top 3 finish nationally at the 2018 ARML, inspired him to bring his leadership and communication skills to university and beyond.

However, during his first year studying finance at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, COVID-19 forced the world to transition from in-person activities to increasingly online ones. Ian, struggling to find meaningful internships now that he was in a separate country, returned to his roots as a teacher and leader. It began with online tutoring family friends, then gradually expanding his base of students, his modes of tutoring, as well as his repertoire. By the time he was allowed to return to Canada and finish his studies, Ian had successfully tutored students in math (helping several students get a 5 on AP Calculus AB), English (including one student going from a C in their Honors class to an A), and standardized testing (where his students gained 250 points on the SAT on average).

As the University of Waterloo finally returned to in-person classes late in Ian’s junior year, he resolved to finish his finance degree while continuing to develop his tutoring enterprise. This allowed him to balance the growth of his hard and soft skills and become a more well-rounded individual. After graduating summa cum laude in 2023, he committed fully to building his own teaching brand. He built lasting relations with students and families across the northeast while also leading classes in several math circles around New York City. This includes both Math-M-Addicts and New York Math Circle, where he has led both classes and seminars on discrete math. As of 2025, he has 8 years of experience tutoring and teaching students ages 9 to 19 in topics ranging from prealgebra to multi-variable calculus, Physics 1 to Physics C, and the SHSAT to the SAT.

Throughout Ian’s time on both ends of the teacher-student relationship, he was able to fully appreciate the intricacies of mentoring. He learnt how to learn and, ultimately, how to teach. Far from the crowded blackboards, erudite subject terminology, and over-worked staff, education entails a process of self-maturation that extends beyond merely getting a good test score. He recognizes that many different students all process information differently (some visually, some with hands-on examples, some with independent inquiry) and tailors his teaching accordingly. Through private tutoring, Ian gives his unique students the personalized, distinct teaching style they deserve.

Rohen Shah

Dr. Rohen Shah is a Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Yale University. He received his PhD from the University of Chicago, where he specialized in behavioral economics. He has previously worked in Ed Tech, and his YouTube videos on mathematics, statistics, and economics have collectively received millions of views. He deeply believes that any complex subject can be broken down and understood by any student, with the right tutor.

Rohen has spent the past 20 years mastering the craft of tutoring, having had over 15,000 hours of experience working with over 1,000 students. He tutors all levels of math from middle school through calculus, including the quantitative sections of standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, DAT, GRE, and GMAT. He specializes in tutoring for the AP Exams in Statistics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Calculus AB, and Calculus BC. He has also served as an instructor for courses at the University of Michigan, University of Chicago, and as a middle and high school math teacher. He was the winner of the National Tutoring Association’s 2018 Tutor of the Year Award.

In addition to his deep content expertise, Rohen has a master’s in education from the University of Michigan, enabling him to employ evidence-based teaching strategies. He customizes the tutoring plan based on the learning goal: improving a standardized test score in a given amount of time requires a different approach than doing well in a year-long course. He believes in starting with “why does this matter?” when explaining a new topic, and connecting it to students’ prior knowledge. He teaches quantitative topics in layers: a concept is first discussed intuitively in full, followed by overlaying math onto this foundation, and finally applying it so that students can transfer the concept to other contexts.

In his free time, Rohen enjoys playing video games (such as Zelda) and plays the Tabla (an Indian musical instrument). He enjoys mentoring young entrepreneurs to develop their business ideas. From 2016-2019, Rohen co-founded a non-profit organization where he wrote and performed educational rap songs around the country.

Christina Li

Christina Li holds both a Master’s and Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science and Analytics from the University of Michigan School of Information, and has been working at Adobe for over three years as a Data Analyst. In her role, she uses Python and SQL to perform data analyses and creates dashboards to effectively summarize findings to upper leadership to provide data-driven solutions for complex business challenges within the generative AI product marketing and post-sales space.

Growing up, Christina possessed a strong aptitude for mathematics. She discovered her passion for tutoring her junior year of high school when she volunteered for her school’s chapter of the National Honor Society. She tutored high school and middle school students in geometry, pre-algebra, algebra, and pre-calculus, achieving significant improvements in her students’ grades. This success led to private tutoring summer sessions, where, through word of mouth, parents sought her guidance to prepare their children for the upcoming school year and beyond. She subsequently became the head of the tutoring committee within the National Honor Society, expanding her role to match students with suitable tutors and provide guidance to other tutors while continuing to instruct various levels of math.

In her undergraduate program, Christina continued to grow her mathematical and analytical capabilities through her coursework and research. In her senior year, she became a teaching assistant for a career coaching course where she taught students how to tackle the internship search process. In her office hours, she worked with her students in a one-on-one setting to help further refine their resumes, cover letters, and interview answers. Her support helped numerous students secure prestigious internships at firms such as Deloitte, PwC, and Google.

Christina continued her education in her graduate studies at the University of Michigan, specializing in courses on machine learning, predictive modeling, and natural language processing. She completed an internship at the National Institutes of Health, where she worked with bioinformatics research data. She then transitioned into the tech industry, completing an internship as a business intelligence analyst at Adobe. She has now thrived in her role for over three years, leveraging her technical skills to drive strategic decision-making.

With her strong analytical background and dedication to mentorship, Christina is well-equipped to provide exceptional tutoring in pre-algebra, algebra, and standardized test preparation, helping students achieve their academic goals. Her commitment to student success extends beyond mere academic achievements, focusing on cultivating confidence and independence in their academic pursuits.

Jenna Denino

Jenna Denino is a dedicated teacher and private tutor with over a decade of experience with New York City students. After receiving a BA in Neuroscience and Psychology and a minor in Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis in 2012, Jenna decided to pursue a career in education. Her interest in brain science, psychology, learning, and creativity drove her to develop a holistic pedagogical approach that recognizes the uniqueness of each student. She prioritizes relationship building and trust as a foundation for solid learning partnerships and works hard to understand her students’ academic and social needs. She has been an active classroom teacher for twelve years and has robust tutoring experience in all subject areas, including all levels of math and science. Moreover, Jenna coaches students across all sections of the SAT, ACT, and ISEE. And she always integrates executive function coaching into her private tutoring and test preparation work.

Jenna earned a Master’s in Education from Long Island University in 2014, which prepared her with the skills needed to teach students with a range of needs and abilities. Certified in both special education and science, Jenna has taught students of every academic level. She approaches her work with students as strength-based, leveraging each student’s interests and strengths to build confidence and achieve educational goals. Students with disabilities, students performing above grade level, and everyone in between have succeeded with Jenna.

As a lifelong learner, Jenna always seeks opportunities to further her education. As a member of the Math for America Master Teacher Fellowship, Jenna actively attends classes and seminars with a community of exceptional math and science teachers. She is also pursuing a Master’s in Social Work from Fordham University to expand her skillset in supporting adolescents in developing the social and emotional strategies they need to thrive into adulthood.

Claire Nottman

Since childhood, Claire Nottman has always been captivated by problem solving, from word games to jigsaw puzzles. As she grew up, she found her favorite types of puzzles to solve were those she encountered in her math and science classes. This passion led her to pursue a path in Biomedical Engineering. As a junior at Columbia University’s Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science, Claire gets to combine her love of creative problem solving with her admiration of elegant scientific solutions as she works towards innovation with a meaningful impact: improved global health.

In addition to her own academic pursuits, Claire enjoys sharing her love of math, science, and learning with others. Through her competition math team Mu Alpha Theta, she has tutored students with various backgrounds in topics ranging from middle school math to advanced calculus. Inspired by the students she worked with, Claire founded the Female Leadership Association in Math, Engineering, and Science (FLAMES) to facilitate community outreach dedicated to inspiring other girls and young women to build their knowledge and pursue a path in STEM. As a volunteer in her school’s Math Lab, Claire learned strategies for approaching problems in ways that center students’ strengths and build their skills and confidence simultaneously.

When working with students, Claire strives to make intimidating topics more accessible by breaking down complex ideas step by step and helps students to make connections between the material and their own passions. Claire is excited to work with middle and high school students as they learn about biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and advanced math (through Calculus III), and prepare for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, or AP Exams.

Outside of the classroom, Claire conducts research with a lab at the Columbia Medical Center, where she studies the biomechanics of pregnancy. She also serves as a Scientific Review Editor for a campus medical journal, where she works with her peers on their written pieces to ensure both accuracy and clear scientific communication. She is an incoming summer intern at an NYC-based consulting firm specializing in healthcare and medical technology. In her free time, Claire enjoys reading, running, baking, and exploring New York City – particularly its vibrant food scene!
