The Literacy Workshop Model
Lucy Calkins is a leading expert in guided reading instruction and writing instruction who teaches at Teachers College of Columbia University. She founded the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, and is the author of books found in 65% of American K-5 classrooms, including The Art of Teaching Writing.
The literacy workshop approach emphasizes student choice, authentic reading and writing, deliberate modeling, and strategic scaffolding. It helps learners become confident, independent readers and writers while giving teachers a clear structure for mini-lessons, practice, conferring, and reflection. These methods continue to evolve through research and school-based implementation at Teachers College. Learn more at the official project site.
