Coleen McIntyre is currently the team leader and head teacher of a 4th grade, fully inclusive classroom in Silver Spring, Maryland. Through her 7 years of diverse teaching and private tutoring experience, she has become an expert at differentiating instruction with her students at the elementary or middle school levels. Coleen graduated from Salisbury University with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She earned her Master’s degree in Global and International Education from Drexel University.
Because of the diversity of learners in Coleen’s classroom, she is constantly working with students in small groups, during all subjects, and is accustomed to creating multiple and varied lessons to meet the needs of each and every learner in her classroom. In both guided reading and guided math group instruction, Coleen is able to meet the needs of each student by working on targeted skills at an appropriate pace. She has expertise with the Jan Richardson Guided Reading, Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading, and Words their Way. In math, Coleen regularly uses Harcourt and Everyday Math programs in addition to a variety of concrete materials to help introduce and develop conceptual understanding. Coleen has also tutored students to help prepare for private school standardized admission tests, including the ISEE.
Beyond the classroom Coleen has helped to promote a positive multicultural environment within her school community by assisting in the development of a yearly international night. Coleen has also worked for many summers as a swim team coach and has enjoyed many years of competitive swimming herself. In addition to her teaching experiences in the United States, she has taught in elementary classrooms in New Zealand and India.
