The Scholastic website features free reading activities, including Listen and Read, a set of 54 non-fiction stories presented through words, images, and sound. These stories and activities are designed for students in the primary grades, and they are divided into eight categories: social studies, science, plants and flowers, environmental stories, civics and government, animals, American history, and community. The site is easy to navigate, and students can engage with these non-fiction texts on a computer or tablet. Teachers can also use these texts with a larger group on a SMART board. As students virtually flip the pages, they can listen to each line of text by clicking on the “listen” button. At the end of the book, students have an opportunity to review key vocabulary.
Teachers using these digital books for guided reading might consider introducing this key vocabulary first. Enjoy!
