Valerie Work is a NYC-based playwright and private tutor. She has eight years of experience helping students to prepare for a wide range of standardized tests and improve their performance in a variety of academic subjects. She tutors the SAT, PSAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, SHSAT, ERBs, Statewide Tests, Hunter HS Entrance Exam, Bard and NEST+M entrance exams, SCAT, Literature, Math I, World History and US History SAT II’s, AP English and History exams, and Algebra and Geometry Regents exams, among others. She also tutors reading, writing, math, history, study skills and other academic subjects, and she assists with middle school, high school and college admissions through mock interviews, essay writing, portfolio preparation and test planning. She has also developed and taught personalized homeschool programs in English and math. She enjoys helping students to tap the underlying logic of standardized tests and improve both test-taking and academic skills.
Prior to her private tutoring career Valerie taught English for two years at Brooklyn College and four three-week summer writing courses at the Duke Talent Identification Program for gifted middle and high school students. She was the Editor of offoffonline, a downtown theater review website, for four years, during which time she edited over 600 reviews and articles. She holds a B.A. from Yale with a double major in English and Theater Studies and an MFA in Playwriting from Brooklyn College. Her plays have been seen at The Brick Theater, the Bushwick Starr, Dixon Place, Classic Stage Company, the 14th Street Y, and Walden Theatre, among other venues.
In her spare time Valerie enjoys watching plays and movies, reading and spending time with friends.
