Emily Kuntz, PhD is a private tutor and writing coach with a multidisciplinary background in the humanities. She attributes her academic success to the foundation set at her competitive independent high school, Kent Place School, in Summit, NJ, where she was a National Merit Commended Student and an Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholar. As an independent school graduate, and now as an educator, Emily knows the opportunities and the pressures of rigorous academic environments and works to challenge her students while maintaining a relaxed, healthy environment.
Emily Kuntz received her PhD from Columbia University in Theatre and Performance, a subcommittee of the English and Comparative Literature department, in Spring 2020. Building off her undergraduate degree from Williams College in Theatre and Philosophy, her dissertation on medieval and Renaissance drama spanned across disciplines including history, theatre, literature and religious studies. Emily is an experienced researcher and writer who knows how important it is to tailor work to the desired audience.
Emily taught first-year composition at Columbia University for multiple semesters, and she is currently a consultant at Columbia’s Writing Center where she works with students on academic writing of all kinds as well as personal statements for internships and graduate school applications. She also taught Shakespeare at SUNY Purchase for two years where she encountered students with a great passion for the subject as well as students who had never read a Shakespeare play before. While carefully scaffolding lessons to bring less experienced readers up to speed, she also helped to create independent studies for advanced students based on their particular interests including psychology and creative writing. Emily also works as a substitute English and History teacher for middle and high school students at The Spence School in Manhattan.
Emily is passionate about making connections between diverse fields and guiding students to find their unique voice. No matter what the subject or genre, Emily can help you to connect to your reader!
In her free time, Emily loves theatre, baking, video games, and walking in the park with her husband and her eight-pound terrier.
