Modern art can be pretty tough to appreciate, especially for kids. But with an art educator, MoMA can become an accessible and exciting place for a Sunday 7th grade outing.
I led the way through the Matisse exhibits, explaining the modern technique and style, and helped my student look at the paintings in a whole new way. To keep things active, I gave verbal directions to create an abstract image, inspired by Matisse!
Next was the Surrealist exhibit. With a quick background lesson about the history of the movement, I was able to connect the art with modern science and technology, perfect for a middle-schooler!
