Dr. Marc Lener is an award-winning teacher, physician, and researcher who has been a highly successful science tutor at MLS over the last 3 years while completing his residency in Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS). Dr. Lener began his career as a high school science teacher at Georgetown Day School in Washington, DC where he taught AP Biology, Chemistry, and Physiology. Throughout his five-year teaching career (2000-2005), Dr. Lener worked as a summer research student at the National Institute of Mental Health in a world-renowned laboratory studying the biological and genetic basis of Schizophrenia.
Dr. Lener’s passion to understand the brain and the mind began during his undergraduate work at the University of Pennsylvania where he majored in the Biological Basis of Behavior; a multi-disciplinary major that featured courses from psychology, animal behavior, and neuroscience. After completing medical school at George Washington University in 2011 and concurrent to his psychiatry residency training at ISMMS, he was accepted into a specialized research track allowing him to perform neuroimaging studies to understand neural correlates of psychiatric illness, such as schizophrenia and depression. Dr. Lener has been the recipient of several research awards for his research on neuroimaging markers of depression and personality disorders, and was chosen as Chief Resident of Research during his last year of residency training. In addition to acquiring a strong foundational psychotherapy training at ISMMS in a wide array of modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IP), and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), Dr. Lener completed a Psychoanalytic Fellowship at the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (NYPSI) in order to further his skills in psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy approaches.
After completing his residency at ISMMS, Dr. Lener will be starting a clinical research fellowship where he will be examining biological markers of Major Depressive Disorder. Dr. Lener’s private practice, located in Bethesda, MD, specializes in depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and adjustment to major life transitions.
