Kristen Sabatini is a current New York City Public School teacher in Manhattan. After growing up in Westchester County, NY, Kristen attended the University of Maryland – College Park to study Elementary Education with a minor in Global Poverty. Throughout her studies, Kristen learned about the need for education reform throughout the United States. This inspired Kristen to join Teach for America after graduation, and she is currently serving as a 2014 corps member. Kristen was selected to teach special education at Public School 5 in Inwood, Manhattan, while currently obtaining her Master’s Degree in education from Brooklyn College. Kristen teaches a self-contained class with students with disabilities from grades 3, 4, and 5.
Kristen’s drive and motivation from teaching comes from her own personal classroom experience growing up. Kristen struggled with reading at a young age and was diagnosed with dyslexia. While friends, sports, and other extracurriculars came easy to her, the classroom was a challenging environment. Watching her two sisters easily excel in the classroom, Kristen felt extremely alone. Throughout these years, Kristen developed her own methods of learning to ensure her success in her education. Kristen understands personally what it is like to feel lost in a classroom and strives to make sure her students never feel alone in their learning. Kristen takes an extremely hands-on approach to teaching. The content and skill should be modified, adapted, and scaffolded to fit an individual student’s strengths and needs. This philosophy of teaching is what ensures Kristen and her students reach their goals.
Through her career in education, Kristen has developed a comprehensive professional background. Kristen has experience with working with students of all ages, Kindergarten to high school. Kristen has worked with Common Core aligned curriculums and programs, such as Words their Way, ReadyGEN Literacy, GOMath, and NY State test preparation. Kristen has also previously worked as a SAT tutor throughout college with the tutoring corporation, Let’s Get Ready. Currently, Kristen is training in Common Core aligned in reading and math intervention programs to help her students grow in math, reading, and writing.
Through her successes and struggles as both a student and teacher, Kristen has developed a unique learning and teaching style all her own. She uses her personal experience and belief in all students to drive students towards the path towards success. Kristen understands what students needs to feel safe, comfortable, and successful in their learning, and she will work to provide that environment. This dedication to her students is what has provided her students with the tools they need to accomplish their goals and what will continue to motivate Kristen to grow and develop as an educator.
In her free time away from the classroom, Kristen enjoys traveling and the outdoors. Kristen has traveled all over the world to countries, such as Italy, Mexico, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Puerto Rico. Of course, she makes time to visit her birthplace of Tokyo, Japan! She loves to be outdoors exploring and learning, whether through museum or zoo trips or runs through Central Park. Her love of nature has even taken her to the depths of the sea when she became a certified SCUBA diver. When she is not traveling or spending time with family and friends, you can find Kristen on a couch with a good book!
