Ginny Feldman, a former Classroom Teacher and Special Educator in Montgomery County, has been working as an Independent College Counselor and Educational Consultant for the past 20 years. Ginny works with high school students from a wide range of schools and geographic locations seeking advice regarding the college admissions process as well as program alternatives. Systematically, she assesses student interests and abilities and helps each individual compile a list of appropriate colleges, universities and programs. Together with the student, she:
- Researches schools and programs
- Develops a resume or personal profile
- Generates ideas for the development of required application essays
- Assists students in developing informal artistic portfolios, if appropriate
- Provides guidance with completion of applications, using an organized checklist and timeline
Most importantly, Ginny understands the needs of all students, particularly those with learning differences. In addition to working with these young adults, her breadth of experience has given her added insight into the needs of their parents. She fully appreciates the anxiety and concerns they have regarding the futures of their children and supports the entire family as they work through this process.
In 2010, she co-founded OPTIONS: Alternatives to College, with her colleague, Didi Sacks. Both longtime educators, they have developed a program to assist young adults and their families in identifying educational alternatives to the traditional four-year curriculum. Their mission is to help these high school students succeed, while also eliminating the stigma associated with technical, vocational, and hands-on training programs. By first identifying the interests of each child, they are then able to provide viable career path choices. Young adults today face an increasingly demanding and competitive work force. Ginny and Didi want to help these students and families to see that choices do exist and to empower them to ultimately triumph in their endeavors.
