I took a child development graduate course at Trinity College in Washington, DC with my colleagues Amy Shapiro and Laurie Gross. As part of the course, we watched the movie Babies, directed by award-winning filmmaker Thomas Balmès, from an original idea by producer Alain Chabat. Babies simultaneously follows four babies around the world – from Mongolia to Namibia to San Francisco to Tokyo. This documentary about babies captures the earliest stages of life and gives viewers a chance to compare and contrast cultural differences about child rearing. As we study Jean Piaget’s developmental theory and Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory of development, this documentary about babies presents a great reminder of how early learning begins.
