Cristina Alicea is an elementary school teacher and experienced private tutor. She grew up in Fairfield County, CT where she was a very shy and reluctant student. It wasn’t until college that Cristina came out of her shell and knew that she wanted to become a teacher. She believes in instilling confidence and self-esteem in all of her students in order for them to be successful. Cristina has a true passion for teaching and learning which she passes on to her students.
Cristina graduated with a B.A. from Manhattanville College in 2008 double majoring in Psychology and Elementary Education. She then continued her studies at Sacred Heart University where she received a Masters of Arts focusing on Literacy. She is certified in Elementary Education (grades 1-6) in both New York and Connecticut.
Her first teaching position was at Cesar A. Batalla School, in Bridgeport, CT where she taught fourth grade dual-language, teaching in both English and Spanish. It was there that she earned the Inclusion Teacher of the Year Award in 2010. After teaching in Connecticut for four years, she moved to NYC and is currently teaching in an inclusive third grade classroom at P.S.124 in Chinatown.
Cristina uses a balanced literacy approach when teaching in order to engage students in both reading and writing. She strongly believes in small group instruction, which can be seen in her classroom during guided reading and station teaching. Cristina is experienced in using math and literacy curriculums such as Everyday Math, Math Connects, TERC Investigations, Empowering Writers and Teacher’s College Reading and Writing curriculum.
Cristina spends most of her Saturdays at the GO Project. a publicly funded non-profit organization serving schools in Lower Manhattan where provides academic interventions for struggling students. Cristina also spends her summers working at Harlem RBI a summer enrichment program, where she focuses on engaging students in Literacy.
Cristina currently resides in the Upper East Side of Manhattan. When she is not teaching, Cristina enjoys being active, traveling and spending time with family and friends.
