Cara Zelas has combined her passion for elementary education with her enthusiasm for tutoring children. Cara earned her Bachelor of Media degree from Sydney, Australia’s Macquarie University, with expertise in film production in the television industry. Having always had a passion for work within an educational environment, she returned to school to complete a Bachelor of Elementary Education from Macquarie University. Following graduation, she worked as a grade four general studies teacher at an independent school in Sydney.
Currently, Cara is studying to become a Montessori teacher through the Teacher Education Program at The West Side Montessori School in Manhattan. Cara has keenly developed a variety of teaching strategies to create a positive learning environment for her students. This learning atmosphere is a place where students are encouraged to ask questions, are excited about learning, and feel confident with themselves, enabling academic and social growth.
A wonderful experience recently changed Cara’s outlook on how children connect with themselves and others, when she joined The Good Dog Foundation with her dog, Little Dude. They have trained to be a therapy team and visit the pediatrics unit at The New York Presbyterian Hospital, The Charter School for Autism and the Special Victims Unit at the New York Supreme Court. Through this experience, children have responded in such a positive way, that Cara is discovering and evolving ways to incorporate dog therapy into her tutoring lessons.
Cara is an avid traveller, reader, and exercise enthusiast and tries to inspire her students to follow their passions and hobbies, which promote a healthy mind, body and spirit.
For the new school year beginning in September 2014, Cara will be teaching at the West Side Montessori School in Manhattan.
