Annie Kehayas is an early childhood and elementary teacher and private tutor with over ten years of experience. She holds an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and Masters degree in Curriculum and Development from The University of Scranton. Immediately after graduating, Annie began teaching third grade in her home state of New Jersey. She looped back and forth between second and third grade for six years before moving to New York and becoming employed by the New York City Department of Education. After teaching both kindergarten and sixth grade for a year, Annie has been teaching first grade in an ICT (Integrated Co-Teaching) classroom in Riverdale, NY for the past five years.
Teaching is something that Annie has always felt inspired to do. When she was in elementary school herself, she had her first tutoring job helping her younger brother with his homework. Annie’s natural patience and creativity allowed her to explain concepts differently to her brother, whose learning differences would require her to use different modalities. She feels that just as a single shoe size doesn’t fit everyone, neither does a single learning environment ensure learning for all. Annie works to provide a variety of experiences through a balanced literacy approach. In math, Annie believes in developing problem-solving strategies and using hands-on materials to enhance understanding. It is her desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing an environment that is safe, supports risk-taking, and invites a sharing of ideas. She is skilled in working with educational programs such as the Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop Project, Everyday Math, EnVision Math, and Words their Way. She has also been trained in Orton-Gillingham.
For Annie, teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of her hopes as an educator is to instill a love of learning in all her students, as she shares her own passion for learning with them. In addition to working with children, Annie enjoys reading, bike riding, snowboarding, cooking, going to the theater, and spending time with family and friends.
