Amy Gates, LCSW-C, is a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in parenting work, marriage counseling and individual therapy. Amy received her Masters in Social Work at the University of Maryland in 1998 and has been in private practice for over 13 years.
In her practice, Amy has a supportive, solution-focused approach, which is practical and results oriented. She focuses on empowerment, learning how to take control to turn a situation around and move forward in a healthier, more productive manner. She views therapy as a process for change rather than merely an exercise in insight.
In her parenting work, Amy focuses on practical strategies to help with parenting challenges, identifying where communication breaks down and what the power balance is in the family. She explores how parenting styles differ and helps clients align their parenting values and become the kind of parents they want to be. Amy has developed a niche working with parents of children with special needs. She helps parents develop coping strategies that can reduce anxiety and offer more peace of mind. As a parent of her own child with special needs, Amy works with these parents on issues such as reaching acceptance, finding balance and reconnecting in their marriage.
Amy has extensive experience working with couples on a range of issues including communication challenges, feeling disconnected, conflicting parenting styles, infidelity and intimacy issues. She helps couples feel more connected and supported by identifying toxic patterns in their relationships, improving communication skills, resolving conflict more productively and increasing trust.
In individual therapy, Amy helps clients through difficult life transitions, especially when they are feeling stuck. She offers a non judgmental atmosphere where clients can decompress, vent and then be able to turn focus to problem solving and moving forward in a healthier, more productive manner.
Amy also offers life coaching for clients who are looking to make changes in their life but are not sure in which direction to go. She helps these clients figure out what is important to them, designs a plan to make these changes, and works with them to eliminate obstacles to reach their goals.
Amy lives and works in Gaithersburg, MD.
